The Rising Concern Over ‘Forever Chemicals’ in Food Packaging: What UK Consumers Need to Know

Food packaging plays a crucial role in preserving freshness and enhancing convenience. Many packaging materials achieve this through water- and grease-resistant substances, including PFAS, commonly known as “forever chemicals.” However, these chemicals have become a growing concern due to their persistence in both the environment and the human body.

PFAS can transfer from packaging into food, leading to human exposure through consumption. Over time, these chemicals accumulate in the body, potentially causing health issues such as cancer, liver damage, and immune system dysfunction.

As awareness of PFAS contamination increases, UK consumers and regulatory bodies are paying closer attention to the risks. A study by the environmental charity Fidra found PFAS in 95% of tested food packaging samples, with 90% exceeding typical background contamination levels. These findings covered a wide range of fiber-based packaging from major UK supermarkets and takeaway chains.

In response, the UK government has introduced a bill aimed at limiting PFAS use, aligning national regulations with international safety standards. The goal is to prevent the UK from becoming a destination for products containing banned PFAS while reinforcing environmental protections and reducing exposure to harmful chemicals.

As regulatory efforts progress, companies like Delipac, part of APP Group, are stepping up with sustainable alternatives. Delipac provides 100% PFAS-free, bio-compostable packaging, offering an eco-friendly solution to businesses looking to transition away from traditional materials.

“This is a major step forward in the UK’s regulation of PFAS, and Delipac, under APP Group, fully supports this initiative,” said [Spokesperson], [Position] of Delipac, APP Group. “We encourage businesses to adopt sustainable packaging solutions that align with both environmental goals and consumer safety.”

With the UK government tightening regulations on PFAS, Delipac and APP Group remain committed to providing eco-friendly packaging that meets safety standards while promoting a healthier, more sustainable future for consumers and the planet.
